Pocket Barometer Compass Compendium by Darton c1895 – SOLD
Pocket barometer compass compendium having 2” silvered and engraved dial with barometric range from 23–31 inches of mercury, the upper portion marked with meterological headings “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair” and “Compensated,” the lower portion signed by the maker “F. Darton & Co, London.” Rotating outer altimeter ring calibrated from 0–8,000ft. Fine blued-steel pointer set beneath bevelled glass. Conventional single capsule movement. Compensation port to verso set at 8 o’clock.
Case-mounted post with suspension ring. Rear-mounted detachable full diameter compass on a thread. The mother of pearl card marked “Singer’s Patent,” with cardinals and intercardinals, jewelled suspension, side-mounted arrestor.
All contained within its original, double-sided green velvet and silk-lined Moroccan leather over wood-covered case, button closure.
The quality of these instruments varies considerably: this is one of the better ones. The subject of service and conservation, both barometer and compass operate satisfactorily in all respects. The brass case retaining virtually all its original gilt lacquer, the dial with no visible marks, the barometer glass with some minor abrasions. The leather case sound with good colour, interior to one lid a little faded. The catch keeper replaced. Overall a very crisp example, very hard to find in this condition.
Banfield, Edwin, Barometer Makers and Retailers, 1660-1900 records Francis Darton & Co as working from various addresses in London from 1834 onwards, and the company existed up until the 1990s.
