Negretti & Zambra Portable Standard Maximum and Minimum Thermometers c1915 – SOLD
Antique thermometers having nickel silver registers set on boxwood and calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit. The minimum thermometer (red alcohol) with a scale from -10 to 130 degrees, the maximum thermometer (mercurial) calibrated 25 to 130 degrees. The versos with twin fold-out hanging loops and marked “G.R. for the Public Service.”
All contained within their original polished blue velvet and silk lined mahogany box, the inner lid with gold block “Negretti & Zambra, Scientific Instrument Makers, London” and N&Z logogram.
Condition: Generally crisp, both thermometers working well, the minimum thermometer with some red staining to bulb area of boxwood backing – this might suggest that at some time this thermometer was broken and replaced by Negretti & Zambra. The mahogany case with some minor marks, abrasions and signs of age. The fabric lining with good colour and vibrancy, the lid silk marked to the left hand end possibly by pigment from the alcohol.
Comments: Such travellers sets were featured in Negretti & Zambra catalogues from 1905 through 1936. Though the image here is from the 1936 M3 catalogue, this set dates to c1915 and at 6″ long is slightly smaller than the sets advertised in the catalogues.
A very scarce set in much better than average condition, and very much a collector’s piece.
