Large French Open Dial Barometer by Naudet c1890 – SOLD
Antique barometer having 7½” open card printed and glazed dial, the periphery with standard meteorological terms, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28 – 31 and divided to 1/20ths”. Blued steel pointer, gilt brass index. 2¾” capsule driven display movement tensioned on a C spring, high finished component parts set beneath a bevelled glass. All contained within scalloped lacquered brass case, extension post and suspension ring, calibration port to verso.
Condition: The subject of a full service and required conservation, the instrument performs well under laboratory test conditions, see performance chart below. Good sensitivity and progression.
A much above average example of these increasingly harder to find better quality larger instruments, the dial essentially crisp but with some minor ageing to the overall appearance. The movement clean and bright with minor spots of oxidation. The case with minor dent to extremity of verso, generally with minor wear and localised minor distortion at movement fixing points to verso. Generally crisp in appearance and retaining much original lacquered finish.
Comments: A very much better than average example, unsigned but the work of the preeminent French manufacturer, being supplied to the retailer. A similar instrument is shown in the Naudet catalogue from 1891.
An aesthetically attractive instrument of quality, for the collector and connoisseur alike.
