Pocket Barometer Altimeter by Negretti & Zambra Retailed by Army & Navy COSL c1870 – SOLD
Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and struck twin scale dial, the outer altitude scale with a range from 0–10,000ft, the inner calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 21–31, the upper portion marked “Compensated,” the lower signed by the retailer “A&N.C.O.S.L.” Fine blued-steel pointer set beneath a bevelled glass maintained within a rotating bezel with associated altitude scale. Conventional early coil spring pattern compensated 1¼” capsule driven movement by Negretti & Zambra, all within a drum form case with central rib. Extension post with bow. The verso with compensation port and screw at 7 o’clock. The whole contained within an oxblood grained leather over wood case having green silk and velvet lining.
The barometer case retaining most of its original lacquered finish, minor losses marks and abrasions, the glass in good order, the dial bright and vibrant, the altitude ring with some oxidation and losses, the bezel freely rotating. The leather case with general wear, some marks and abrasions, essentially sound with good colour, the interior velvet remaining bright and clean, the lid silk with some fading though remaining sound. The instrument, serviced and calibrated, with good sensitivity and progression.
A very good collectable and hard to find example, certainly by Negretti & Zambra and of particular interest owing to the early pattern movement. Very much a collector’s lot.
The Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd was incorporated on 15 September 1871, being formed a group of army and navy officers. The aim of the co-operative was to supply goods to its members at the lowest remunerative rates. In 1934, the society was incorporated into a limited company – Army & Navy Stores Ltd – and continued to trade under this name until 2005 when House of Fraser, which had bought the company in 1973, rebranded the remaining Army & Navy stores under its own identity.
