Pocket Mountain Barometer Altimeter Compendium by Dring & Fage c1890 – SOLD
Dring & Fage altimeter with finely engraved and silvered 2″ dial concentric brass dial, the rotating outer ring with altitude scale from 0–8,000ft, the fixed inner dial scaled from 23–31 inches of mercury, inset with maker’s legend “Dring & Fage, London” surmounting the firm’s dagger and crescent trademark, the lower portion marked “Compensated” and having semi-circular mercurial thermometer set against a scale from 0–160 degrees Fahrenheit. Blued-steel pointer set beneath bevelled glass. The reverse with floating compass, mother of pearl card set with compass points and inscribed “Singer’s Patent” and serial no. “22232,” bevelled glass, card arrest lever, compensation adjustment screw. The whole contained within its fine Moroccan leather-covered, double lidded, green silk and velvet lined case, embossed with initials “P.M.A.” in gold block.
These aneroid instruments were the Rolls Royce of must-have gadgets in their day. This Dring & Fage altimeter survives in fine original condition, and function is very good. The case lacked its small opening buttons – these have been replaced together with a very small piece of leather. Very rare in this condition and by a premier London maker.
The firm of Dring & Fage is recorded in Banfield, Edwin, Barometer Makers and Retailers, 1660-1900 as working from several addresses in London from 1798 until well in to the 20th century.
