Miniature Gold Pocket Barometer Performance Chart
A particularly unusual 18 carat gold miniature aneroid pocket barometer altimeter c1870

Miniature pocket barometer having 1¼” silvered and engraved dial, the outer rotating altitude ring calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 8000ft, divided to 100ft, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 23” – 31”, divided to 1/10”. The upper part with standard meteorological terms, and “Compensated”  annotated to the lower part. Blued steel pointer, bevelled low dome glass. Early pattern movement of conventional form driven from a single ¾” single nickel alloy capsule tensioned on a coil spring.

Contained within an 18k gold hallmarked barrel form case with engine turned verso, calibration port, extension post and suspension ring. The whole contained within its original burgundy leather over timber, blue silk and velvet lined case, swinging catch and keeper.

Condition: The subject of full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions. The movement working well over the standard barometric range though less consistent at lower pressures, see performance chart. The dial with some signs of ageing, the altitude ring re-silvered, the gold case with some impressions to circumference, generally crisp overall.

Comments: Amongst the most difficult of these sought after miniature instruments to find, gold being the most prized of all.

A very unusual piece and certainly of interest to the collector, connoisseur and gift-giver alike.
