Antique Pocket Compass with Nautical Pattern Dial c1850 – SOLD
Antique compass having 1½” dry card floating dial, probably metal with applied paper top, with hand drawn nautical pattern quadrant rose, marked with cardinals and intercardinals, and divided to 1 degrees increments. Bevelled crystal held within a gilt brass barrel form case, suspension post and bow.
The whole contained within its original moroccan leather over wood, deep blue velvet lined case with swinging catch.
The dial with minor age-related marks, the crystal free of chips, the brass case, with no dents or dings, retaining most of its original gilding, with losses predominantly to bow. The dial swings freely, the compass easily finding north. The outer case in excellent condition, the velvet bright, the leather intact with some staining.
An unusual and attractive antique pocket compass.
