Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered die struck dial, the bezel driven outer rotating altimetric scale calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 8,000ft divided to 20ft, the inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 23–31” divided to 1/20^th of an inch. Concentrically annotated standard meteorological terms, the upper part marked “Compensated.” Blued steel pointer, bevelled domed glass. Standard configuration movement driven from a single 1″ capsule tensioned on a C spring.

Both instruments contained within a drum form case, the barometer side with engine turned finisher and ribbed decoration to circumference. Extension post and suspension ring. The compass may be detached giving access to calibration port.

All contained within single tier twin lidded leather over timber, green silk and velvet lined travel case, snap closure on button release.

Condition: The barometer, the subject of a full mechanical overhaul, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart. Near perfect dial with perhaps a hint of ageing, the altitude ring moving smoothly, the barometer responding well with very good stepless progression, accuracy is easily acceptable across the entire range. This is unusual as most of these instruments become very inaccurate at extreme high or lower pressures.

The compass swings freely and finds north easily, compass lock works well. The outer lacquered brass case retaining virtually all its original finish, minor points of wear only, very minor scratches and some very slight oxidation.

The travel case unusually, in very good condition, retaining most of its original high finish, small repair at button release, the buttons replacements. The fabric lining bright and vibrant with minimal signs of wear.

Comments: This is a recognised pattern that originated as early as 1865, and has stood the test of time. This example is about as good an example as could be found, very crisp throughout and working well in all respects. The instrument remains entirely original, though the glass over the barometer may have been replaced.

Very much a collector’s piece.
