A very good five glass mahogany cased drum barograph with dial retailed by Dollond No 6505 c1910

The short chassis movement raised on four turned pillars, screw adjusted aluminium recording arm driven from an eight autonomous capsule sensor via amplification levers and pivoted cross shafts. Beam mounted calibration setting knob, arrestor bar, ink station with bottle and dipper. 4½” silvered and die struck dial having standard meteorological terms, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28” – 31” and divided down to 1/100ths”, and marked with Short & Mason registered design no. “428606.” Japanned pointer.

Standard 3¾” x 3¾” inch recording drum no. “3802” with matching sun wheel, seven day movement with platform escapement. Top cover, glued charts.

The mahogany case with polished finish, lift off cover with heavy bevelled glasses, frieze drawer to base. Retailer’s plate marked “Dollond, London, No 6505.”  

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions. The movement working well with very respectable accuracy, less so above 30.5” Hg but to be expected with these antique instruments. Retaining much finish to brass work with excellent colour, some areas of light ageing and minor discolouration. The dial with some ageing, shading and slight losses.

The mahogany case with excellent shine and good colour, some losses to ultra violet light. The glass in generally good condition, some scratches to top, small chip within frame at end glass.

Comments: This is essentially a Short & Mason instrument, though probably assembled in house at Dollond from parts supplied. The mahogany case is certainly better quality than most, and typical of Dollond with a much superior finish.

A very attractive and better quality instrument, harder to find with a dial and very few seen by Dollond.
