Barothermograph having fine lacquered brass and steel mechanism arranged vertically and raised on four turned pillars over a full length chassis. The barometer movement driven by five 1⅞” capsules, the thermograph with ovoid section tube temperature sensor resembling a part section of a Bourdon tube, mounted horizontally below the plinth. Both recording onto a 2⅝” diameter, 5” high drum having concealed eight-day platform escapement movement. The top with turned winding plug having engraved key symbol, centre drum securing knob. The chassis struck with Richard Frères’ “RF” logogram and instrument serial no. 58230, arrestor bar with side mounted actuation lever.

The whole contained within its end opening mahogany case having nickel-plated security catch, keeper and transport handle. Original winding and setting keys, bottle of Maxant ink with dropper.

Sourced in completely untouched condition, this instrument has been the subject of a substantial overhaul, comprising a total strip down, conservation, re-setting and honing of all pivots and proper alignment of levers, the original pens re-set, adjustment and calibration.

This barothermograph combines extraordinarily good sensitivity and accuracy. Study of many barographs and other similar instruments show clearly this maker’s superiority over all others in terms of design, quality and engineering. The miniature series were made in small numbers and in differing configurations, this instrument being the most useful.

In completely original condition, losses of lacquer to mahogany case, the movement retaining virtually all original lacquered finish, some aging and small localised areas of oxidation. Very good working order, crisp overall. A wonderful addition to any desk.
