Gilt Brass Pocket Barometer by Callaghan No 8422 c1900
Pocket barometer having 1¾” engraved and silvered dial, the upper portion signed by the maker “Callaghan & Co,” the lower with business address “23a New Bond St, Corner of Conduit St, London.” Calibrated in inches of mercury with a range 26–31, blued steel pointer, rotating bezel with index, contemporary replacement glass. Conventional high quality single capsule movement stamped “8422,” barrel form case with engine turned strip, compensation port to rear set at 8 o’clock. Suspension loop and fixing post. Contained within its original blackened Moroccan leather green silk and velvet lined case, printed gilt maker’s cartouche to inside lid.
A quite scarce item in fine condition, the brass case retaining almost all its original gilt finish, the dial in good original condition, some very minor marks (as viewed in critical light). The leather case with replacement opening button and minor restoration to surrounding leather facing, the case with minor losses commensurate with age. The instrument serviced and inspected, on test it shows good sensitivity and transition.
Bearing in mind the overall condition and its very attractive case. this increasingly difficult to find model is a very collectable example in much above average condition. Absolutely a collector’s lot.
