A rare 2¾” acrylic three piece pocket forecaster by Negretti & Zambra in original pouch c1970

A very scarce 2¾” diameter pocket forecaster comprising three concentric disks set about a common centre. The white inner disk for setting recorded barometric reading, with three rectangular apertures showing various solutions depending upon the pressure state, ie rising, steady, or falling; the middle, green disk marked with barometric pressure scale and direction of wind indicating arrow, the outer white disc marked with wind direction. The verso with corresponding forecasts. Together with original blue plastic sleeve marked with the Negretti & Zambra ‘lazy N’ logo, instruction sheet numbered “01521.”

Condition: Generally crisp, minimal signs of use.

Comments: This is the final and rare version of a long line of forecasting discs produced by Negretti & Zambra, this example probably manufactured under the stewardship of Jim Haggatta working from the newly re-worked N&Z premises at Willesden. The ‘lazy N’ logo dates from 1965, designed by Al Rourke.

Very few of these instruments are known, probably because by 1970 it was no longer fashionable to indulge in weather forecasting, so purchase of this device was almost certainly minimal.

As a final version, it is a notable improvement on its celluloid predecessor – the addition of a corrugated circumference to the green disk making this a much more manageable instrument to manipulate.
