Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and struck concentric scale dial, the outer altitude ring calibrated from 0–3,000ft, the inner scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28–31, the inner dial annotated with standard meteorological terms, “Stormy,” “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” “Very Dry,” the upper portion marked “Compensated for Temperature,” “No. 18228,” the lower signed by the retailer, “Lennie, Edinburgh.” Blued steel pointer, set beneath bevelled glass maintained within a rotating bezel supporting the altitude ring.
High quality Short & Mason conventional pattern movement driven by a single 1½” capsule, the chassis struck with “S&M” monogram. Housed within a barrel form case having suspension pillar and pinned bow, the verso with compensation adjustment port and screw. The whole contained within its claret grained leather over wood green silk and velvet lined case, snap closure on a button release.
Slight losses with minor oxidation to lacquered finish, the glass with minor scratches, the leather case with slight losses, minor abrasions, some wear to underside.
This is a lovely pocket barometer in first class condition. Serviced and calibrated, it works well and responds with good sensitivity. The leather case is in fine condition, retaining most of its original high gloss finish. A most desirable piece.
