Miniature Silver Gilt Compass_3
A very rare miniature silver gilt hunter cased pocket compass by Benjamin Alfred Green, London c1867

Antique pocket compass having ⅞” diameter white enamel dial with handpainted cardinals, intercardinals and false points, with decorative rose to centre. Fine steel bar needle suspended on jewelled pivot. Bevelled crystal held in bezel with gilded reflector ring.

Solid silver hunter style case with reeded decoration and oval cartouche with initials “DLG” (or possibly “DIG”), push button release for upper case on suspension post, silver bow.

The dial crisp and clean, the crystal undamaged, the needle swinging freely and finding north easily. The silver hunter case with marks commensurate with age and use, the lid release working well. The outer case retaining most of its original gold-plated finish, some losses to edges; the inner case with almost all its gilding. Hallmarks to inner lid and case verso for Benjamin Alfred Green, London and 1867.

Extremely rare in this size, this is a good antique pocket compass that would make a lovely gift.
