Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and engraved dial with barometric scale from 25 – 31 inches of mercury with stations at the inch and divided to 1/20ths, associated rotating bezel altitude scale from 0 – 6,000 feet with stations at 1,000s and divided to 100s. The upper part marked “Compensated,” the lower signed by the maker “Elliott Bros, 449 Strand, London” and serial no. “2184.” Fine blued steel pointer set beneath a bevelled glass. Single 1¼” capsule driven first quality movement, ribbed barrel form case with extension post, suspension ring and calibration port to verso.
All contained within its original fine oxblood moroccan leather over timber cream silk and navy blue velvet lined case, maker’s gold block logogram to lid silk, delicately tooled rims, snap closure on a button release.
If there is an example of a really fine Victorian pocket barometer, this is it. In just wonderful original condition, retaining almost all of its original finish, vibrancy and colour, fully serviced, conserved and calibrated, function shows excellent sensitivity and progression. Good working order.
The case with small repair to the area around the button which is a later replacement, some minor abrasions and losses to suspension post and bow. Overall crisp sound condition. Certainly a collector’s piece.
