Pocket barometer compendium, the barometer with silvered and engraved dial, the upper portion marked “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” further marked “Improved Scale – Compensated” and “Rd 149175,” with calibrations from 21-31 inches of mercury, outer altitude ring from 0-10,000 feet. Barrel form case with suspension ring and compensation port with adjuster at 4 o’clock. The well-executed 1¼” capsule driven movement with polished and blued screws, bi-metallic compensation, unsigned but undoubtedly the work of Negretti & Zambra.
The compass in matching barrel form case, mother of pearl hand-painted floating card modelled on the Singer’s patent pattern, with cardinals and inter cardinals, crown-mounted transit lock with suspension loop. The thermometer set on a bone register with calibrations in degrees Fahrenheit and Centigrade. The whole presented in a good quality plum velvet and silk-lined brown Moroccan leather over wood travel case with button release.
The barometric altimeter with minor radial marks to dial, the case retaining virtually all its original gilt lacquered finish, working well with good sensitivity and transition. The compass finds north easily, the transit lock works well, the case retaining virtually all its original gilt lacquer finish. The thermometer scale with some losses to scales. The travel case lid re-lined in silk, minor mark to top. The leather to outer case overall in excellent orginal condition, some marking and minor abrasions to bottom.
Registration No. 149175 was issued to Francis Barker & Son on 1st May 1890. Francis Barker, the most prolific and innovative compass manufacturer of the day, provided compasses to Negretti & Zambra which were often then branded with the N&Z name.
These compendia are becoming increasingly difficult to find and must now be considered very scarce in this condition. A well-recommended collector’s piece.
