Pocket barometer with silvered and engraved 1¾” dial, the outer rotating altitude scale marked in feet with a range from 0–10,000ft, the inner barometric scale marked in inches of mercury with a range from 22-31, the upper portion marked “For Direct Reading” and “Compensated.” The lower portion signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra, London” with serial no. “18516.” Blued steel pointer, fine bevelled glass set in a rotating bezel. Conventional pattern 1¼” capsule driven lacquered brass movement. Drum form case with post and suspension ring, compensation port to verso at 8 o’clock.
Contained within its original oxblood moroccan leather over wood, purple silk and blueberry velvet lined case. Snap closure on a button release.
Extremely rare in this condition, this classic pocket barometer altimeter by Negretti & Zambra is unusual in that the dial is marked “For Direct Reading,” a refinement to the movement that negated any mathematical adjustments to the observed pressure, and an indication that the instrument is of first quality intended for scientific or exacting measurement.
This particular instrument survives in very nearly as new condition with only the most minor handling marks. The lacquered brass case retaining almost all its original lacquered finish with wonderful vibrant lustre, the dial is clean with original silvering. Offered here in good working order and condition, having been the subject of a detailed inspection, service and conservation. The case remains in similar, near new original condition, the internal fabrics retaining virtually all their original colour and vibrancy, the leather near perfect retaining almost all the original high finish.
In short, a very desirable collector’s piece in exceptional condition that is now very hard to find.
