Pocket barometer compendium having delicately engraved and silvered combined stepped 2″ dial with calibrations in inches of mercury, with a range from 18–31 inches, and feet (altitude) from 0–15,000 feet, inset centre bearing meteorological headings “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” with “Compensated” below, the lower section signed by the maker, “J. Hicks, Maker, London,” with serial no. “10,006,” semi-circular mercurial thermometer set against a Fahrenheit scale with a range from 10–120 degrees, blued steel pointer, bevelled glass, deep rotating bezel with index, plain form case having suspension post with 15ct gold ring, compensation to rear set at 8 o’clock. The whole contained within its original imperial purple velvet and cream silk lined circular Moroccan leather over wood case.
Compendia may be considered scarce. This instrument is not only in very fine original condition, it is also the work of a top London maker. The suspension loop in 15ct gold is almost certainly a replacement – it bears a Swiss cruciform hallmark denoting gold with a purity not exceeding 18ct, and is pinned.
The case rear with some very minor marks. The leather case with a depression to the lid, essentially sound with good colour. Serviced and calibrated, this pocket barometer compendium remains in absolutely original condition.
