Presentation Ships Wheel Barometer by Betjemann c1900 - SOLD

Image of Ships Wheel Barometer by BetjemannPresentation novelty desk barometer with 4½” engraved and silvered dial, the upper portion with barometric scale calibrated 28-31 inches of mercury, annotated “Stormy,” “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair” and “Very Dry,” the lower portion with semi-circular mercurial thermometer set against a Fahrenheit scale with a range from 10 to 120 degrees. Blued-steel pointer, gilt brass telltale, bevelled glass. The whole contained within a drum-form case modelled upon a nine-pin moveable ship’s wheel, rotation causing the index to move. Compensation port to rear at 3 o’clock. Stylised front and rear plates supported on a bevelled plinth with engraved inscription, velvet to base.

A scarce item by George Betjemann & Sons, though no identifying marks are present, this is a very well-executed piece with good aesthetics. Though the inscription is dated 1912, it is likely that the design originates from the 1880s.  The movement is undoubtably the work of Ross of London, and one of the pleasing aspects to this piece is the moving wheel which causes the telltale to move about the dial!

The inscription reads: “1912, Tonbridge Fat Stock Show, Prize for Best Sample of Weald of Kent Hops, Given by Messrs W.H. and H. Le May, Hop Factors, 67 Borough High Street, London SE, Won by Mr W. Santer.”

Retaining a good proportion of original lacquer, areas of patination, and some losses particularly to the plinth and verso. The dial with some areas of sub-silver oxidation, minor losses to extreme circumference, some minor marks. Dismantled, cleaned and conserved, the movement serviced, pointer replaced, plinth re-faced with period velvet, base of one pin replaced. Remaining original in all other respects.
