Very Rare Gimballed Pocket Compass by Barker for Norie & Wilson c1885 – SOLD
Antique gimballed pocket compass having 1″ mother of pearl Singer Patent design floating card dial on a jewelled bearing with cardinals and intercardinals, North indicated by a lyre and a luminous triangle, South indicated by a inset circle of mother of pearl and the remains of luminous paint. The lower portion of the dial marked with the retailer “Norie & Wilson, 156 Minories, London.”
Bevelled glass held in a weighted oxidised brass case, itself suspended in an oxidised brass gimbal held within a chrome-plated outer sheath which, when pulled out releases the gimbal mechanism; when pushed in, engages the transit lock for the compass card.
The whole contained in a polished brass hunter case with spring-activated access lock in suspension bow.
The floating mother of pearl card, swinging freely and finding north easily, in excellent condition, with just losses to the luminous paint circle marking south, the crystal dusty but free from chips, the brass case and gimbal retaining almost all their original oxidised finish, the chrome-plated sheath sides in very good condition, the top showing signs of wear consistent with use. The hunter case exterior showing just traces of its original oxidised finish, the inner lid with much original finish, with marks where the original instruction label would have been.
In full working order, this is a real collector’s piece.
