Antique aneroid barometer having 6” open faced ceramic dial, the upper portion marked “Stormy, Much Rain, Change, Fair, Set Fair” and “Very Dry” and having semicircular barometric scale annotated 28-31 inches of mercury, marked “Wet or More Wind” between 28-29” and “Dry or Less Wind” between 30-31”. Further marked with the retailer’s name “Moody Bell & Son, Cheltenham.”

The lower portion with curved thermometer annotated “Fahrenheit” above and “Centigrade” below, having twin corresponding scales, the upper scale 20 to 140 degrees, the lower scale -10 to 60 degrees (Centigrade). Further marked “Fall for S.Wly, SE, SW,” “Rise for NEly, NW, NE” and “Except Wet from NE Direct.”

The dial open to the centre, affording visual inspection of the single capsule movement having 2½” capsule, highly-polished C spring, intricately shaped cock and associated components contained within a lacquered brass well. Blued-steel pointer, gilt brass telltale set to bevelled glass. Turned pillar with large suspension ring. The whole within a spun lacquered brass case with compensation adjustment port and screw set at 4 o’clock to verso.

Although unsigned, this antique barometer bears all the hallmarks of the French maker, Pertuis Hulot & Naudet, regarded as being one of the world’s very finest makers of such barometers – the detail and quality here testify very well to that reputation. Surviving in very good original condition, the lacquered brass case with high copper content retaining almost all its original finish and colour, the movement in fine condition. Serviced and calibrated, this barometer demonstrates excellent transition and sensitivity
