Redier Pocket Barometer PB2314 Performance Chart

A good French early C20th nickel plated aneroid pocket barometer altimeter for the English market in the manner of Redier c1900

Pocket barometer having 1⅞” silvered and die struck dial, outer bezel operated altitude ring calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 8,000ft and divided down to 50ft, inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 23” -31” and divided down to ⅒”. Blued steel pointer, low dome glass.

The movement constructed above and below a single plate driven from a single 1¼” capsule acting on a cantilever train terminating at a rack and pinion. All contained within a low drum form case with engine turned finishers, extension post and bow, calibration port to verso. Together with its correct square form faux black leather over a timber and brown felt lined travel or presentation case. Pressed gilt brass catch and keeper.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions. The dial crisp and clean with slight ageing, the case retaining a very good proportion of its original plated finish, the movement working well with acceptable accuracy across the standard range, the travel case structurally sound, the exterior worn.

Comments: French-made pocket instruments for the English market are not common, and it’s quite fun to find one in such good condition and complete with its travel case, reportedly originally the property of a serving officer in the Boer War.

Collectable, practical and attractive, and just a nice thing.
