Dancer Pocket Barometer

Pocket barometer altimeter having 1¾” silvered and struck twin scale dial showing 0–10,000ft, and 21–31 inches of mercury, the upper portion marked with the retailer’s name “J.B. Dancer, Optician,” the lower marked “Manchester” and “Compensated.” Fine blued-steel pointer set beneath a bevelled glass maintained within a rotating bezel with index. Conventional high quality compensated 1¼” capsule driven movement tensioned on a coil spring, all within a lacquered brass drum form case with plain central rib and with engine turned divided borders. Suspension post with bow. Compensation is achieved by loosening a small grub screw and turning the back plate.

The whole contained within its oxblood grained leather over wood case having wine coloured velvet lining, snap closure on a button release.

The dial crisp, the brass case retaining most of its original lacquered finish, with losses to bezel, suspension post and bow. The travel case in exceptional condition, with very slight loss to leather over button.

Serviced, calibrated and in full working order, this antique pocket barometer is a good example of this respected maker’s work, manufactured for a leading retailer of scientific instruments.
