A very good early lacquered brass aneroid barometer altimeter by Negretti & Zambra for Baker, 244 High Holborn, London No 1064 c1890

Large aneroid pocket barometer having 2½” French silvered and engraved dial, the outer rotating altimetric scale calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 20000ft and divided to 50ft and 100ft increments, the inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range of 21” to 31” and divided to 1/10th”. The underside of the dial dated “April 1890.” The upper part marked “Compensated” with serial no. “1064,” the lower with retailer’s particulars. “Baker, Optician, 244 High Holborn, London.” Blued steel pointer, bevelled glass. Conventional improved Vidi pattern movement driven from a single capsule tensioned on a C spring, contained within a brass drum form case, marked “H,” with extension and suspension ring. Calibration port to verso.

All contained within its original brown leather over timber cream silk and blue velvet lined case, snap closure on a button release.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart. Crisp overall, minor marks to inner glass, the dial clean, the brass case retaining most of its original lacquered finish. The travel case generally good, repair to case leather over button, minor marks and wear, the lid silk stained, the blue velvet with good colour and vibrancy.

Comments: A really good quality early aneroid barometer altimeter, still able to resolve pressure with commendable accuracy. Must be considered scarce in this condition and of this type.
