A very unusual, attractive exhibition style aneroid barometer and thermometer set in an anchor form African hardwood case for H. Blackham & Son, Wolverhampton c1900
Aneroid barometer having 6” open centre illuminated card dial, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 26” – 31” divided down to 1/50th, standard meteorological terms, blued steel pointer, gilt brass index, deeply bevelled glass.
The exhibition grade movement with polished and embellished component parts driven from a single 2¾” bright plated capsule tensioned on a C spring.
The thermometer of very individual design with reverse sited substantial bulb, much magnified broad thread set on a 5” composite register having a range calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit from 40° – 70°, bevelled glass, signed by the retailer, “H. Blackham & Son, Wolverhampton.”
The whole set in a well carved hardwood frame in the form of an anchor.
Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions. The barometer working freely with good sensitivity across the range, see performance chart from dynamic test.
The barometer dial essentially in good order with some signs of ageing, the glass clear. The thermometer working well with unbroken thread and accuracy to approximately 1½° degrees at 67°F. The brass bezel repaired at 12 o’clock, the glass clear. Both bezels to barometer and thermometer re-lacquered in keeping with the original finish.
The timber frame structurally sound, essentially undamaged and with good colour.
Comments: This is a really very unusual piece, specifically for the type of thermometer having the great advantage of being visible at some distance. The exhibition grade movement adds much to the interest, coupled with a very attractive “High Victorian” dial. The proportions are good and the piece has strong aesthetic appeal. This is the first instrument of this pattern seen.
A lovely instrument adding instant focus in any room with the added advantage of obvious practicality.
