A very good early aneroid hanging barometer No 26283 by Negretti & Zambra, London c1875
Antique barometer having 4¼” zinc backed hand drawn card dial, the barometric scale calibrated in inches with a range from 28″ – 31″ divided down to 1/50th, the inner part with standard meteorological terms, signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra” with addresses “38 Holborn Viaduct, 122 Regent St & 45 Cornhill, London” and instrument serial “No. 26283.” Blued steel pointer, gilt brass index, flat glass. The standard Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 2¾” nickel alloy capsule tensioned on a C spring.
The whole presented in a drum form bell mouthed brass case with pendant and bow, calibration port to verso.
Condition: Fully serviced, conserved, and calibrated under laboratory conditions. The movement working well with good sensitivity and progression, maximum error approximately 1/10th” across the range, see performance chart from dynamic test.
In really very good condition, the glass having been professionally replaced.
Comments: Not a rare pattern though card dialled instruments by this pre-eminent maker are extremely hard to find in good condition, particularly with hand drawn dials.
This is a good example of early English aneroid barometer making, the dial very good, the movement working exceptionally well, the brass case retaining some original finish otherwise patinated with age. A worthy addition to any collection.
