A good Georgian long necked gold plated antique compass by Cary in original case c1810


A high quality, 1½” diameter gilt brass pocket compass having enamelled card dial with hand painted cardinals, intercardinals and false points, fleur de lys indicating north, small arrow to NNW indicating magnetic north at the time. Polished flat steel bar needle with jewelled suspension, highly-polished gilded reflector ring, low dome crystal. Gilt brass drum form case, long necked suspension post and Georgian bow with transit lock button behind. 

All in original moroccan leather over wood, champagne silk and imperial purple velvet lined travel case, swinging catch.

Condition: The compass remaining in completely original condition, retaining much of its original gold-plated finish, losses to suspension post and bow, marks to verso. The crystal with points of oxidation, not easily visible to the naked eye. The transit lock at fault.

Comments: In good working condition, this very original Georgian pocket compass, over 200 years old, would make a wonderful gift!
