Short & Mason barograph with mechanism overall of grained and lacquered brass construction. First quality 8-day drum recorder with compensated balance on a platform escapement, the drum bearing “Pat. No. 3715.02” and serial no. “5370” and mounted on a conventional base of conical form with static gear and bearing serial no. “5370.” Captive winding key and top cover. The mechanism set on a conventional chassis bearing maker’s legend “Short & Mason Ltd, London,” with fluted border and raised on four turned pillars. Seven-capsule set with adjustment wheel over, grained white metal recorder arm with tension adjustment, base-mounted arrester bar set between stop pins. Recording range 28-31 inches of mercury.  Contemporary ink bottle with corked dipper maintained in tubular flanged holder. The whole contained within its original well-executed lacquered and polished oak case, the base with frieze chart draw having gilt brass stylised drop handle, the cover of heavy bevelled five-glass design reflecting the period neo-classical design.

A very fine instrument, the mechanism having been stripped and cleaned, pivots polished and re-set, the case having been cleaned only and polished, this Short & Mason barograph remains original in all respects.  The test sheet illustrated shows excellent sensitivity and function. Minor inconsequential distortion to drum base.  Very much a collector’s item – see Banfield, Edwin, Barometers: Aneroid and Barographs, p118, fig. 104 for an image of a very similar item.
