John Campbell, an engineer in the shipbuilding industry, spent three years constructing this model steam engine, for which he achieved six prestigious Scottish awards.  It is believed he cast many of the main components including the fly-wheel during his time working for William Arrol & Co at the Parkhead forge in Glasgow, the remainder of the engine being handmade by him, including the mahogany base, and mahogany and glass display case.

The engine is complete with a photograph of the builder standing next to it, together with the medals and awards of merit achieved at various science and artisan exhibitions over the period 1903-1914.

This model steam engine was on display in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum in Glasgow for a number of years. It was demonstrated there running on compressed air.
