Exceptional Victorian Three-Tier Writing Box by Hurst – SOLD
Writing case constructed in heavy tooled dark blue leather over wood, gilt brass hinges and corner protectors with foliate scroll engraved motifs, blued screws, fine leather-faced interior with gold-lined borders, moire silk facings and writing surfaces, heavy top-mounted retracting transport handle, Bramah lock to lower front.
The inside lid fitted with swing out stationery storage divided into six compartments of varying size, sprung detent mechanism released on a half-moon button set below lock keeper plate, writing instrument and accessory station constructed in moire silk facing and gilt-edged leather loops, extensive green moire silk facing with gilt-edged border. Three inset parian writing tablets set within a leather and gilt-edged tray. Lift out fine leather-faced ink accessory/storage station. Original twin cut glass ink bottles, one denoting red ink, gilt brass lids with matching scroll and foliate engraved detail. Further lift out moire silk-faced tray. Fold out green moire silk-faced writing slope set within leather and gilt lined borders. The middle section with sliding retainers and storage below the lower section with storage below.
Some losses to gilding on exterior fittings, cracking to leather at hinge between bottom and middle tier, minor marks generally. Replacement Bramah key and spare.
Manufactured by one of the finest makers of the time and surviving in absolutely magnificent condition, this writing case is an extremely fine object in sound original state.
A great rarity, this is absolutely a collector’s piece.
