Rare Height & Weather Indicator Pocket Barometer Altimeter by Wheeler c1925

Image of Height & Weather Indicator Pocket Barometer Altimeter by Short & Mason c1935Pocket altimeter having 1¾” inch two-tone dial, the outer japanned altitude scale with a range from 0 – 10,000ft divided to 100ft, inner silvered dial having barometric pressure in a quadrant to the upper part calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 28 – 31, the lower portion marked “Height & Weather Indicator” together with “Rd No 667100.” Blued steel pointer set beneath a bevelled glass maintained within a rotating bezel with associated altitude scale. Conventional compensated 1¼” capsule driven movement, all contained within a drum form case having central rib with engine turned end ring. Case extension with pinned bow. The verso with compensation port and adjustment screw. The whole contained within its original brown leather and imperial purple velvet lined coupled case.

This very unusual instrument, taking design cues from air altimeters of the period, has a principal function as an altimeter. Usefully equipped with a barometric scale, the user is able to monitor changing weather conditions. The Registered Design number is recorded to Thomas Wheeler, dated 6 March 1919, and “The Wheeler Pocket Height and Weather Indicator” was advertised as being designed for use by aviators in Flight magazine of 7 August 1919.

A most attractive design, the numeric display being picked out in white set against a black background contrasting well with the silvered dial centre. The case is similar to those issued to the Air Ministry containing the back up or test small pocket barometer-style altimeters manufactured by Wheeler.

The brass case with losses to circumference and suspension loop, the dial with minor losses and signs of ageing. The instrument, having been the subject of a full service, conservation and calibration, shows good sensitivity and progression. Working well.

Crisp original condition overall, and definitely a collector’s quality piece.
