A good quality French-made brass open faced aneroid barometer by Hüe for the English market c1890
Aneroid barometer having 7½” back-printed translucent glass dial, standard English meteorological terms, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 25” – 31” divided down to 1/50”, the lower part captioned “Aneroid Barometer.” Bevelled edge glass with centre mounted index.
Special display Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 3” nickel alloy capsule tensioned on a C spring, mirror polished components, blued screws. Set in a conical silvered reflecting bowl.
All contained in a scalloped lacquered brass case, pendant and bow, calibration port to verso.
Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement working well with both good sensitivity and progression, due to age unable to resolve pressure below 26”.
The original glass with clear back-painted indices. The silvered reflector bowl with some ageing, the movement in very fine condition. The brass case with traces of original lacquer, some patches of oxidation.
Comments: These instruments are very decorative and particularly attractive in the larger less common diameters, the Hüe movement particularly interesting. Remaining in original condition, combining good aesthetics with a very practical application. A similar barometer can be seen in the image of the Hüe trade card below.
