Very Large Victorian Aneroid Barometer c1890 – SOLD

Image of Huge Victorian Aneroid Barometer c1890Aneroid barometer having 10″ glazed transfer and hand-illuminated ceramic dial with barometric range from 26 – 31 inches of mercury, standard meteorological annotations, “Stormy,” “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” “Very Dry.” Applied decoration to centre. Blued steel pointer, matching gilt brass telltale, bevelled glass retained within a lacquered gilt brass bezel. Conventional single 3” capsule driven movement.

The whole fitted into a substantial turned and hand carved oak case with rope theme to circumference, and marked ‘5062’ to verso. Calibation port to verso.

Surviving in very good original condition, the dial with age-related crazing to glaze, the brass bezel with some pitting and minor hair line cracks though the integrity of it is not affected, the inner bezel with minor oxidation. The oak case with good colour, minor hairline crack to front from 3 to 9 o’clock, not visible to the rear.

A very unusual instrument with immediate visual impact – shown here alongside the commonly seen 4¼” dialled instrument an impression of scale is easily appreciated. Although unsigned, the movement is almost certainly by Short & Mason.

Fully dismantled, serviced and conserved, the instrument responds well to pressure changes. An item to impress.
