Improved Marine Aneroid Barometer by Short & Mason c1935 – SOLD
Marine barometer having 6” painted and printed brass dial, marked with barometric scale from 28–31 inches of mercury, meteorological headings, “Fall for Wet or More Wind, S. SE. SW.,” “Rise for N. NW. NE., Dry or Less Wind,” the upper portion marked “Improved Marine Aneroid” and “Compensated,” the lower portion signed by the retailer, “H. Hughes & Son Ltd, 59 Fenchurch Street, London E.C.” Blued-steel pointer, gilt brass telltale with red enameled arrow, setting knob set to heavy bevelled glass. Substantial gilt brass bulkhead case, rear mounting flange with fixing points. Calibration port set to verso at 3 o’clock.
Well-executed 3″ capsule-driven marine movement raised on three pillars with nickel finish parts and applied anti-corrosion coating. Chassis marked with the Short & Mason “S&M” logo.
Serviced, conserved and calibrated, this Short & Mason marine barometer shows good sensitivity and progression. The dial in exceptional condition, the brass case retaining traces of its original gilt finish.
Such a substantial marine barometer in a gilt brass case is very unusual, and would suggest a luxury purchase for a significant yacht. Very much a collector’s piece.
