NW. NE., Dry or Less Wind,” ​the upper portion marked “Improved Marine Aneroid” and “Compensated,” ​the lower portion signed by the retailer, “H. Hughes & Son Ltd, 59 Fenchurch Street, London E.C.” ​B​lued-steel pointer, gilt brass telltale with red enameled arrow​, setting knob set to ​heavy ​bevelled glass. Substantial gilt brass bulkhead case, rear ​mounting ​flange​ with fixing points​. Calibration port set to verso at 3 o’clock.

​Well-executed 3″ capsule-driven marine movement r​aised on three pillars​ with ​nickel finish parts ​​and applied anti-corrosion coating​. Chassis marked with the Short & Mason “S&M” logo.

Serviced, conserved and calibrated, this Short & Mason marine barometer shows good sensitivity and progression. The dial in exceptional condition, the brass case retaining traces of its original gilt finish.

​Such a substantial marine barometer in a gilt brass case is very unusual, and would suggest a luxury purchase for a significant yacht. Very much a collector’s piece.
