A very good leather cased large sized pocket aneroid barometer altimeter probably by Francis Barker circa 1922

Large pocket barometer having 2½” silvered and die struck dial, the outer bezel operated altitude ring calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 10,000ft and divided down to 50ft, inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 21” – 31” divided down to 1/20th. The upper part with standard meteorological terms, further marked “Compensated,” the lower part annotated “Made in England.” Fine blued steel pointer, bevelled glass.

The conventional gilded 1st quality Vidie pattern movement, dated “9.22,” driven from a single 1.5” nickel alloy capsule, tensioned on a C spring. All contained within a semi barrel form lacquered brass case, pendant and bow, the verso with calibration port.

Presented in its correct oxblood leather over timber, green silk and velvet lined case, snap closure on a button release.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement working with good sensitivity and easily accurate enough across the standard barometric range for domestic purposes, some drift noted at lower pressures.

The dial crisp and bright with no visible marks, the altitude ring re-silvered. The lacquered brass case retaining virtually all its original finish. The leather case structurally sound, the leather covering in good condition with excellent colour, release button and leather over replaced. Very crisp overall.

Visually and tactilely attractive, this is obviously a very high quality piece.
