A good large mahogany cased quadrant travelling compass by Francis Barker, London c1870


Travelling compass having 3” paper dial, the outer part showing quadrants, divided to one degree, the inner part displaying cardinals, intercardinals, false points, and by points. Blued steel needle marked “N” and “S” in gold, suspended under a brass cap. Flat glass contained within a brass bezel.

All contained within a square mahogany case with hidden hinges, transit lock, and twin swinging hook closure. The inner lid marked with initials “RBH.”

Condition: The paper dial with slight signs of ageing, otherwise clean. The needle swinging freely, and finding north easily. The glass with original firing flaw and minor marks. The mahogany case in very good condition, hinges firm. Transit lock working correctly.

A good example of these collectable compasses.
