Image of Mantle Barometer by Negretti & ZambraSilvered and engraved 4¼” lacquered brass dial marked “Stormy,” “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair” and “Very Dry,” and scaled from 28-31 inches of mercury, the lower portion with maker’s legend “Negretti & Zambra, London,” No. 17778,” blued-steel pointer, gilt brass index set to heavy bevelled glass with adjustment wheel to centre. 2″ deep contoured case with turned pillar and suspension loop, the rear with calibration port set at 4 o’clock. The whole contained within its contemporary mahogany case with ornate moulded base and top, circular glazed viewing port with sprung closure.

The aneroid mantle barometer in good condition with excellent sensitivity and transition retaining much of its original lacquered finish, the lacquer slightly lifted to dial centre. The unusual and attractive case with good colour and proportion. A high quality attractive item, lending itself well to interior decoration, in this combination seldom seen.

Negretti & Zambra, founded in 1850 as makers of scientific instruments, were the most prolific and leading makers of all types of barometers during the second half of the 19th century. The partnership exhibited at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851 and won a Prize Medal. Negretti & Zambra held the appointment of instrument-makers to Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and Edward VII, the Royal Observatory and the British Admiralty (see Banfield, Edwin, Barometer Makers and Retailers, 1660-1900).
