Early Pocket Barometer Altimeter by Ross No 679 c1875
Antique pocket barometer altimeter having 2” silvered dual concentric engraved dial with rotatable altitude scale. The inner dial calibrated in inches/Hg with a range of 26–31 inches of mercury, the outer with an altitude range from 0-4,000ft. The dial centre marked “Compensated,” signed by the maker “Ross, London,” and serially numbered “679.” Fine blued-steel pointer set beneath bevelled glass. Machined high polished bezel set to flat finished rhodium-plated and lacquered brass case, stem with suspension loop. High quality lacquered brass conventional movement with bimetallic compensation to secondary lever. The case rear with compensation port set at 4 o’clock.
Presented in its original, fine, burgundy, embossed patent moroccan leather-covered case with cream silk and imperial purple velvet lining, the case retaining virtually all its original finish, the inner lid marked “1484.”
Serviced, calibrated, in good working order and in near-new condition. The pocket barometer with very minor marks to verso, losses to finish on suspension loop, the dial crisp.
A very fine and collectable instrument.
