A very good lacquered brass stepped dial aneroid pocket barometer and thermometer compendium by Francis Barker c1914

Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and die struck stepped dial, the outer part with bezel driven altimetric scale calibrated in feet with a range from 0-10,000ft and divided down to 50ft. The inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 21” – 31” and divided down to 1/20th. The inner part with standard meteorological terms and marked “Compensated”, the lower with semi-circular thermometer, the register calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit with a range from 20° – 150°. Blued steel pointer, bevelled glass.

The standard configuration movement driven from a single 1” nickel alloy capsule and tensioned on a C spring, the chassis inscribed with the date “24/1/14” and “B&R.” All contained within a brass semi barrel form case with engine turned finishers. Pendant and bow, calibration port to verso.

Presented with its correct oxblood leather over timber, purple and silk and velvet lining. Snap closure on a button release.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The barometer movement working with a high level of accuracy to 23” Hg where resolution begins to fall away.

This is a crisp piece in very original condition, the dial clean and clear. The thermometer working well with unbroken thread and accurate to within 1 degree as measured at 60°F. The brass case retaining virtually all its original lacquered finish, minor marks and losses to verso. The leather case with a good repair to the locality of the button, otherwise structurally sound with good gloss, the fabric interior with some loss of colour and associated ageing.

Comments: Although unsigned, this is almost certainly the work for Francis Barker, a major manufacturer of aneroid barometers at the time who produced almost solely for the trade, rarely self-signing instruments.

A really very attractive and functional instrument in well above average condition. Collectable.
