Image of Pocket Barometer Compendium by Elliott Retailed by Newton c1865Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and engraved dial with barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from  24 – 31, having stations at inches and divided to 20ths, the upper part marked with standard meterological terms “Rain” “Change,” “Fair” and “Compensated,” the lower signed by the retailer “Newton & Co, 3 Fleet St, Temple Bar, London.” Blued steel pointer, bevelled glass, single 1¼” capsule driven conventional movement. Barrel form case having central rib, extension post and suspension ring, calibration port to verso.

Semi-circular mercurial thermometer set on circular ivory register calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit and Centigrade, with ranges 10 – 140 and -10 – 60 respectively. Centrally mounted compass having ¾” inch card dial, compass rose to centre with cardinals and intercardinals, blued steel needle.

All contained within its original oxblood moroccan leather over timber deep blue velvet lined case with finely tooled rim. Snap closure on a button release.

These early compendia are very hard to find and evidently good quality, the barometer and probably the compass and thermometer almost certainly the work of Elliott Brothers, London, made to special order for Newton & Co.

The pocket barometer retains much of its original lacquered finish with minor losses and wear to the case. Fully serviced and conserved, good sensitivity and progression, and in good working order. The compass, an unusual pattern in a compendium as most are of the Singer Patent pattern, finds north easily. The thermometer with continuous mercurial thread. The substantial register with good colour and without damage.

A good example of this type of increasingly difficult to find compendium. Very much a piece for the collector.
