Image of Maxant BarometerMaxant barometer having silvered 4″ dial with finely engraved twin scales, scaled to 0–1500 metres and 66–76 centimetres (approximately 26-31 inches of mercury), the upper portion marked “Barometer de précision,” “Compensé,” the lower with maker’s signature “L. Maxant,” “38, Rue Belgrand, Paris,” blued-steel pointer, rotating bezel with index point, all set beneath bevelled glass. Substantial contoured nickel-plated drum case, the back with compensation screw set at 4 o’clock, turned pillar with suspension ring.

Fully serviced, this aneroid Maxant barometer is highly sensitive with excellent progression. The case with minor abrasions, slight depression to side at eleven o’clock, the glass with two very small chips to bevelled edge.

A very fine quality instrument from this reputed French maker, which may be considered a ‘Goliath’ pocket barometer.

Léon-Charles Maxant (1856-1936) started out as a maker of watch movements before the acquisition of several companies, including Maison Desbordes in 1877, broadened the company’s scope into precision instruments related to pressure or air pressure measurement, namely barometers, manometers, and barographs, as well as pyrometers, thermometers, thermographs, laboratory equipment, dynamometers, speedometers, marine instruments and much more.  In 1905, Maxant took over Maison Antoine Redier.   For many years, Maxant was headquartered at 64 rue de Saintonge, Paris, but by 1902 there was also a branch at 38 rue Belgrand.
