Short & Mason Presentation Barometer Performance Chart
An unusual leather cased portable gilt and lacquered brass aneroid presentation barometer by Short & Mason c1921

Small presentation barometer having 2⅜” silvered and die struck dial with barometric range from 26” – 31” of mercury and divided to 1/20th”, standard meteorological terms, blued steel pointer, rotating bezel with fine index. Premium quality movement, dated “5/1/21,” driven from a single 1¼” capsule tensioned on a C spring, shallow drum form case, gilt brass bezel and calibration port to verso.

The whole presented in its original fitted black leather and green velvet and silk lined case, original calibration certificate to inner lid, snap closure on a button release.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation and calibration under laboratory conditions, the movement apparently working almost exactly to original specification – quite exceptional, see performance chart. The barometer very good with only minor marks and losses to case, the dial clean. The leather case with some minor losses externally, a lateral break towards the rear bottom and signs of an historic repair. The fabric interior retaining its original colour and vibrancy, in good condition.

Comments: Almost certainly made in very small numbers, we have not been able to find a similar example in Short & Mason catalogues of the time, suggesting these were used as awards for staff members, favoured agents, etc. The performance data for this instrument as observed under laboratory conditions closely matching the original test certificate, showing excellent sensitivity and smooth step-less progression. The case is of similar interest being quite unusual, and designed to display this small and very attractive barometer, the rotating bezel functioning whilst sited in the case.

A collector’s piece.
