Silver Pocket Barometer Retailed by Aitchison, Hunter Case by Oliver c1905 – SOLD
Die-struck 1¾” silvered dial comprising outer rotating altitude ring on crown with altitude scale from 0 – 10000′ with stations at 1000′ feet intervals subdivided to 100′ increments, inner barometric scale with a range from 21 – 31 inches of mercury. Dial marked with the retailer “Aitchison & Co, Opticians to H.M. Govt, London & Leeds.” Blued steel pointer. All set beneath a low dome crystal. Conventional 1″ capsule-driven movement tensioned on a C pattern spring. The movement, though unsigned, undoubtedly the work of Negretti & Zambra.
The whole contained within an engine-turned silver case, the verso with vacant cartouche and adjustment port. Hallmarks to inner lid and circumference of lower case, including the silversmith’s mark “ATO” for Albert Thomas Oliver, and date letter “K” for 1905. Complete with its original maroon leather over timber green velvet and silk lined case. Snap closure on a button release.
The travel case circumference restored, fabric interior shows signs of ageing, otherwise good sound crisp condition.
The barometer and silver case remain in very good condition, the dial crisp and bright with minimal signs of age, the silver case being dent free though some minor marks are present to the engine-turned portion on the verso. The lid opens and closes securely, the altimetric scale moving cleanly.
Silver pocket barometers in the hunter pattern are scarce, and this example remains in absolutely original condition, save restoration to the travel case. The subject of a complete strip down, service and re-calibration under laboratory test conditions, now producing very acceptable accuracy.
