Singer’s Patent compass having 2⅞” hand drawn floating dry card with Singer’s Patent rose, showing Singer’s trademark lyre and star, further marked with cardinals and intercardinals, suspended on a red gemstone bearing. The card verso balanced with sealing wax. Contained within a drum-form case with push-on lid, flat glass with sprung retainer. Inner lid carrying the Francis Barker “Trade Mark London” triangle with FB&S logogram inside.
Rolled case retaining much of its original lacquer, card with signs of ageing. The compass swings nicely, easily finding north.
A very good example of these desirable compasses, surviving in much above average and original condition. The dial identical to the higher numbered Singer’s Patent cards, indicating that this was manufactured very shortly after the expiration of Samuel Berry Singer’s patent in 1868.
A very good collector’s piece and a super gift.
