Aneroid barometer having 95mm silvered and die struck stepped dial, standard meteorological terms in French, the barometric scale calibrated in mmHg with a range from 690mm – 780mm, divided to 0.1mm, lower part marked with retailer’s details “E. Dunoyer, Geneve.” Open centre with gilt finisher, silvered reflector ring, blued steel pointer. Heavy bevelled glass with gilt index and setting knob.

Exhibition movement driven from twin 50mm capsules tensioned on a C spring, highly finished components with plated and burnished small parts and blued screws. The movement stamped with the early Lufft logo, and on the verso the handwritten number “19234.”

All contained within a drum form case, extension post and suspension ring, standing pins.

Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions. The movement working exceptionally well with good sensitivity and progression showing a high level of accuracy, see performance chart. The case retaining a good proportion of its original lacquer, some points of oxidation, minor dents to bezel, the verso with minor depression and slight damage to extreme edge. The original glass which appears damage free. 

Comments: Clearly designed and manufactured as a premium quality piece, this style of table barometer appears in Lufft catalogues from 1891 and 1910, though the earlier catalogue only offers a single capsule option. The later catalogue carries this exact barometer as Model 517.

Gotthilf Lufft founded the firm Mech Werkstatt G Lufft in Stuttgart, Germany in 1881, and was the pre-eminent German manufacturer of barometers and barographs. Lufft, a name that rapidly gained worldwide recognition for excellence, supplied the majority of such instruments to the German government and armed forces during both World Wars. 

Interestingly, the first barocyclonometers (the enhanced Faura typhoon barometers) designed by Father José Algué, S. J., director of the Philippine Weather bureau, Manila observatory, were commissioned by him from Lufft in the early 1900s, ahead of the, by then much respected, French and British makers, because of the consistent excellence of Lufft’s production.

This table barometer is a very unusual model, and certainly represents amongst the very best in continental aneroid barometer making.
