ANTIQUE 9CT GOLD & BLOODSTONE COMPASS SPINNER BY MATTHEW WILCOX c1901

9ct Gold & Bloodstone Compass Spinner Matthew Wilcox_16a

A very attractive and unusual 9ct gold compass bloodstone spinner, a charm, pendant or fob c1901

Miniature compass having ½” diameter hand decorated Singer Pattern mother of pearl floating card on jewelled suspension, showing cardinals and intercardinals, Singer’s trademark star and lyre indicating north. Bevelled glass. The compass in gold belcher style surround held within an elegant 9ct gold spinner mount with a bloodstone to the reverse. Both the compass surround and the spinner mount hallmarked for the goldsmith Matthew Wilcox, and the surround carrying further hallmarks for 9ct gold, Birmingham and 1901.

Condition: The compass serviced, swinging freely and finding north easily, small loss to hand decoration. The glass replaced. The bloodstone in very good condition, a very few light marks not visible to the naked eye, the compass surround with small impression to side.

Comments: A beautiful spinning pendant, charm or fob from the first year of the Edwardian era, we have only found one other piece in this same style spinner mount, also hallmarked for Matthew Wilcox, suggesting that the design was unique to this goldsmith.

NB: the beautiful glowing image of the bloodstone was taken lit from behind whilst the compass was removed for servicing – it shows the quality of the stone.

A very attractive and useful gift!
