Pocket barometer with silvered and engraved 1¾” dial, the outer altitude scale marked in feet with a range from 0–8,000ft, the inner barometric scale marked in inches of mercury with a range from 23-31, the upper portion marked “Stormy,” “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair” and “Very Dry.” The lower portion signed by the maker “Negretti & Zambra, London” with serial no. “25820.”
Blued steel pointer, fine bevelled glass set in a rotating bezel with fine index. Conventional pattern 1¼” capsule driven lacquered brass movement. Contoured barrel form case with post and suspension ring, compensation port to verso at 8 o’clock.
Contained within its original oxblood moroccan leather over wood green silk and velvet lined case, the lid silk with Negretti & Zambra oval cartouche in gold block with London address at “45 Cornhill, Holborn Viaduct & 122 Regent St.” Snap closure and button release.
The lacquered brass case retaining almost all its original lacquered finish with good colour, the dial is clean with original silvering. Offered here in good working order and condition having been the subject of a detailed inspection, service and conservation. The case remains in similar good original condition, the internal fabrics retaining much of their original colour and vibrancy, the leather with minor abrasions and some scuffing to sharp edges, otherwise sound.
Becoming very scarce in any condition, these classic barometric altimeters reflect a period of good quality in making by Negretti & Zambra, a combination of skill of hand and new machinery contributing to a very satisfying product. This particular instrument survives in exceptional original condition with the added benefit of its original case and attractive gold block cartouche to the lid silk which greatly add to the overall aesthetic charm of the item.
In short, a very desirable collector’s piece that is now very hard to find.
