Antique Chart Table Marine Barometer by Casella No 1452 c1870 – SOLD
Chart table marine barometer having 4¼” silvered and engraved engine-divided dial calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 24 – 31, having stations at inches and 10ths, divided to 1/50ths. The upper part signed by the maker “L. Casella, Maker to the Admiralty & Ordnance, London,” the lower “Compensated” and serial no. “1452.” Fine blued steel pointer, rotating reflector ring and bezel with index. Bevelled glass. 3” diameter single capsule driven substantial first quality movement. Drum form case with extension post and suspension ring, compensation port to verso.
All contained within its original green velvet lined, dovetailed oak case, snap closure with unusual lever release. Locking key.
These barometers are infrequently seen and were manufactured in relatively small numbers, the application principally being maritime as a partner to a marine chronometer. This is reflected in the scale which reads 4″ lower to 24″ of mercury than standard instruments intended for use within the Northern Hemisphere only. Lower pressures, of course, are frequently found within the Tropics crossed by many shipping routes.
This particular instrument, No 1452, is clearly of superior quality and the work of one of London’s finest makers. The instrument remains in entirely original condition, retaining most original lacquer, some hazing to the bevelled glass, small scratch.
The subject of a full service and calibration, function is stepless with very sensitive progression and detailed resolution. The case shows signs of age, the interior fabric, though sound, is faded, the lock surround with some losses, the exterior probably latterly lacquered. Covering to the bottom replaced.
With lovely aesthetics, rarity and certainly a practical use, this is very much an item for the collector or connoisseur alike.
