Image of Ross Pocket Barometer with Thermometer c1880Antique pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and engraved stepped dial, the outer altitude scale with a range from 0 – 10,000ft divided to 100ft, the inner calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 21 – 31 divided to 10ths of an inch, the upper portion marked with standard meteorological terms “Rain,” “Change” and “Fair,” and “Compensated,” the lower part with semi-circular mercurial thermometer calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit with a range from 10 – 160. Fine blued steel pointer set beneath a bevelled glass maintained within a rotating bezel with associated index.

Conventional compensated 1¼” capsule driven movement, all within a Ross pattern drum-form case with engine turned bezel ring. The verso with compensation port and screw to 2 o’clock.

The whole contained within its oxblood grained leather over wood case having cream silk and imperial purple velvet lining. The lid lining with gold block logogram. Snap closure on a button release.

Perhaps one of the most attractive of pocket barometer compendia, the stepped dial and thermometer, together with the style and execution of the engraving, giving this now very hard to find instrument great aesthetic appeal. Almost certainly the work of the world renowned instrument maker, Ross of London, it would have been made for sale to a third party retailer.

The instrument shows little wear, retaining virtually all its original lacquered finish, some minor marks and three significant scratches to the outer case. The dial with minor discolouration. The bezel rotates easily and the instrument works well across the whole scale. The leather case with some external losses, marks and abrasions. The silk lid lining aged but nicely intact with a well formed “crown” logogram, the base velvet sound with good colour. The case structure sound and complete, the release button and keeper replaced.

A good example of pocket barometer making at its best.
