Antique Pocket Barometer Travel Compendium by Dollond No 7886 c1900 – SOLD
Travel compendium comprising lacquered brass aneroid pocket barometer, 1¾” engraved silvered dial calibrated from 23-31 inches of mercury, altitude ring calibrated from 0-8000ft. Upper portion marked “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair” and “Compensated,” lower part marked “Dollond, London, No 7886.” Blued-steel pointer, rotating bezel with altitude scale. Bevelled crystal. Conventional single capsule movement, barrel-form case with compensation adjustment to rear set at 7 o’clock. Turned and stylised pillar with suspension ring.
Matching 1” magnetic compass with jewelled bar needle, calibrated to 360 degrees with cardinals and intercardinals. Lacquered brass case with crown-mounted arresting lever. Turned and stylised pillar with suspension ring.
Mercurial 2½” thermometer set on an ivory scale, calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit and Centigrade.
All contained within original burgundy, Moroccan leather, ovoid-style case with twin doors. Fold-out easel stand to rear, brass closing clasp to the front.
Created with the gentleman traveller in mind, these compendia are scarce and, in this condition, rare. A high quality piece, both the pocket barometer and compass being well-engineered. Crisp overall condition; all items are in good working order, retaining almost all their original lacquer and colour. The leather-covered case, similarly, is in good condition with some scuffs and losses – most of those that survive have succumbed to deterioration though exposure to ultraviolet light and storage in poor conditions.
Serviced and calibrated, this is very much a collector’s piece.
